Residents in Brittany have been found to have more than double the potentially fatal melanoma skin cancer as people on the Riviera and nearly two and a half times that of people in the rest of France.

There are two reasons:

* the fact that Bretons were largely fair-skinned and blue eyed, making them more liable to skin cancers generally than the dark-skin and brown-eyes of the Riviera.
* and that exposure to the sun and UV rays is just as fierce on the Atlantic coast as on the Mediterranean but that it was ‘masked’ and made less aggressive by clouds and wind, so people protected themselves less.
